Shantou, located in the southeast of Guangdong Province, is one of the five special economic zones in china, a famous overseas Chinese hometown and an important port city in china. Its geographic coordinate is 116,40" E and 23, 21". It has a tropical submarine climate with annual average temperature of 21.3 °C, rich in sunshine and rainfall.

Longhu District, located in the center of Shantou and the outlet of Han River, is the birthplace of Shantou Special Economic Zone(S.E.Z.). Approved by the State Council in March 2003, the administration divisions was adjusted, which enlarges the area of Longhu District. Covering an area of 103.13 sq/kms, it administers five subdistricts of Chuchi, Jinxia, Xinjin, Longxiang, Ouding and two towns of Waisha and Xinxi, with 327.9 thousand permanent residents and 200 thousand temporary residents.

Longhu District, as a result of opening up and construction in the past 20 years, has basically become an opening new urban, which mainly develops industry, commerce and trade, meanwhile develops tourism, finance, transportation, construction, real estates and agriculture. With the unique location, excellent investment environment and quality service, Longhu District is attracting more and more business people at home and abroad to invest or buy estates.

Export-oriented economy is the main part of economy of Longhu District. Since the founding of the district, over 1.2 billion US dollars of foreign capital has been practically used, which mainly comes from more than 20 countries and regions of HongKong , Macau, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, United States and Germany. 12 world well-known multinational companies, like Henkel Group from Germany, Makro Group from Holland, Wal Mart Group from the U.S.A. have made investment and set up enterprises in Longhu District. 6 foreign-funded enterprises have been listed as "Top 500 largest foreign-funded enterprises in China." The industry output of foreign-funded enterprises accounts for more than 50% of the total industry output of our district.

The state-owned enterprises is synchronously developing with Shantou S.E.Z. mainly develops imp/exp trade and meanwhile develops industry, construction, real estates and tourism. In order to meet the demands of the marketing economy, the state-owned enterprises are actively carrying out the reform of property system, for the purpose of inpouring new energy and vital force.

Private enterprises are developing rapidly. Longhu District has been taking supporting measures to set up the favourable investment environment, attracting private enterprises to settle and develop here. The province-level technology park for private enterprises has passed the approval made by the Science and Technology Department of Guangdong. Private economy is playing a more and more important role in the economy of our district. A batch of famous brands with reputation at home and abroad have appeared, such as Southeast Packing Company and Nanmei Electronic Company. Private economy has become a new and bright increasing point in Longhu District.

Industrial base is strengthened day by day. Industries in Longhu District fall into some twenty categories, including electronic, information, electric equipment, machinery, textile, garments, chemical, plastic, packaging, printing, pharmaceuticals and foodstuff. Fifty percent of the products are for export. Numbers of famous brand products with reputation at home and abroad were formed, such as Kaiser brand fur clothing, Playboy brand garments, Billy brand jeans and Henkel brand chemical products, Yulei and Fengshen brand flavor pickled vegetables in serial. Waisha Town is named Specialized Town of Chaoshan Handicrafe Knitted Garments.

Foreign trade is active. Trade and cooperation relation with the business people of more than 80 countries and regions has been set up, forming the multi-level foreign trade structure which combines domestic trade with foreign trade, direct trade with indirect trade, transit trade with ocean trade. The main export commodities include 20 categories and over 1,000 kinds.

Commerce is prosperous. Financial and real estates are flourishing. A number of specialized Markets and commercial network with unique characteristics have been set up, and several large retail shopping centers have been opened in Longhu District, such as Makro shopping center, Wal Mart Group, Parkson Department Store, Quanya Department Store and South China Mall. As real estates industry is developing, numbers of residential quarters with certain scale and level have been constructed.

Investment environment is improved day by day, with superior geographic location, convenient transportation, modern telecommunication, complete infrastructure and living service facilities, and condensed organs for economic management and service. There are industrial parks with complete facilities in Longhu District, including Wanji Industrial Park, Zhujin Industrial Park, Longxin Industrial Park, Longshen Industrial Park, Longzhou Industrial Park, Pengxiang Industrial Park, Fengnan Industrial Park. A great number of important transportation facilities of Shantou are located in Longhu District, such as Shantou Airport, Guangzhou-Meizhou-Shantou Railway Station for passengers and cargo, Shantou Bay Bridge, the entrance and exit of Shenzhen-Shantou Expressway and Shantou-Fengshuiguan Expressway, and Shantou Deep-water berths, which makes Longhu District an important transportation hub and commercial and financial center of Shantou and even of east Guangdong.
